Kara - Last Daughter of Krypton

Costume"
You really can't have a Supergirl film without a super suit. Over the years, the have been all sorts of outfits for Kara; most of which involve some sort of mini skirt. Sure some of them are cute but not very practical.

Around the time that Kara's costume was being designed, I happen to catch a video of a female UFC fighter who was commenting on the new costume for the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. She pointed out that there were two major flaws in the costume design that made it totally impractical. The first it that the design had high heels. The other was that Wonder Woman's hair was loose rather than pulled back.

When it came to our design, we commited to something that was both functional and sensible but that still honored Supergirl's history. That meant no mini-skirts and no high heels. It also meant that if Kara was doing combat or combat traing the cape would need to be removed and her hair out of the way. The sketch to the right was the original design that pretty much being the final look.
Costume Sketch
Costume Here is the breakdown of the design from head to toe and what went into each component.

Hair
In the scenes from "Battling Bullies" where Kara is doing combat training with Ellen, her hair is put up in a milk maid braid. In other scenes where she is not doing combat, her hair is down.

Cape
We used a simple circle cape pattern made of a dark read suiting fabric from JoAnn's Fabrics.

Suit
For the suit we wanted some sort of pattern that resembled the hexagonal plates that re seen in Japanese armor. Sadly, there was not enough time to explore this properly. We then decided to go with the same type of chainmail pattern that had been used in "Man of Steel". We found a place called In Disguise Designs who was able to provide that fabric. The suit was essentially a shirt and pants set. We went with a high collar to give a more armored and authortaive look.

House of El Emblem
This one was rather tricky. we wanted something more dimesional like the emblem that was used in the "Man of Steel" marketing. The emblem on the suit in the movie, while textured is rather flat. We were able to find a plaque on line that was the right size and design. We bought that and thenm made a ruber mold of it. From that we were able to make a silicon emblem. the gold behind it is the same fabric that was used for the suit but painted gold. The whole thing was then velcroed to the chest.

Belt and Buckle
The idea being the belt was to hide where the shirt velcroed into the pants. The belt was mde of silicon and then had the same gold fabric element that was used in the emblem incorporated into it. To make the bucke we first found a belt buckle with the eblem on it around wich we made a clay oval. A mold was made and the bucle cast in resin. It was then painted gold. The back story on the buckle was that it actually a tech pod; like a cellphone on steroids.

Gauntlets
These were also cast in silicon. they had smaller tech pods worked into them. For those we found pins with the emblem design that we were able to scult and cst in teh same way we did the belt buckle.

Boots
A number of attempts were made on the boots. Ultimately what ended up being done was taking some flat sole slippers form Walmart and gluing the fabric onto them. The fabric used was also from In Disguise Designs. They had a hidden zipper on the inside and red and gold design elements at tehe top that echoed the gauntlets.
